Costa Rica is considered one of the most beautiful countries on earth. In addition to its diverse tropical landscapes, incredible biodiversity, and pleasant climate, Costa Rica is also valued for its friendly, pleasant, and relaxed people, who have made “la pura vida” – “pure life” – their motto and enjoy a simple and authentic life without pressure or stress. Costa Rica's biodiversity is world-leading: on only 0.03% of the Earth's land mass, the country is home to about 5% of the world's biodiversity. About ¼ of the country is national parks. Almost 100% of electricity is generated without fossil fuels. According to international rankings, the healthcare system is ranked 8th in the world (compared to Germany: 12th). According to the Global Retirement Index ranking by the US magazine International Living, Costa Rica has been one of the top 3 countries for retirees to emigrate to for years. Costa Rica has about 6-7 different climate zones. The Nicoca Peninsula and many other parts of the country have distinct rainy and dry seasons. Temperatures during the rainy season are on average a few degrees cooler than during the dry season. In principle, travel is possible and recommended throughout the year, but it is less advisable at the end of the rainy season, i.e. October/November, as very heavy and prolonged downpours are possible during this period. Unfortunately, roads away from the main highways are not always in good condition, especially after the end of the rainy season. It is therefore advisable to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle if you want to drive safely on rural side roads. Costa Rica can be reached by direct flight from many countries, e.g., Germany, Switzerland, the USA, etc. A return or onward ticket is required for entry.
The vacation home is located on our eco-finca (for more information, see “Finca Linda Vista”) on the edge of a small village in the mountains of Costa Rica on the Nicoya Peninsula, in the heart of the so-called Blue Zone. At an altitude of about 700 m above sea level, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The view into the distance and the tranquility are soothing for the soul. The almost constant light breeze and mild maritime climate make a stay here very pleasant, even for older people or those with health problems. Temperatures range between approximately 18 and 31 degrees Celsius all year round. Neither heating nor air conditioning or fans are required. The finca has its own water supply.
The vacation home is approximately 60 square meters in size, plus a veranda (approx. 30 square meters). It consists of a kitchen-living room, two bedrooms (one with a loft), five sleeping places, a bathroom, a laundry room, and a spacious veranda where you can enjoy the wonderful view as if from a box seat. The house is also suitable for longer stays. We have tried to build and design our vacation home according to North American/European standards and needs.
The amenities include: bright and high-ceilinged rooms with a variety of ventilation options, good lighting inside and outside, and sufficient and easily accessible power outlets. Two king-size mattresses (2 x 2 m), one mattress measuring 1 x 2 m, a comfortable sofa, a stove with oven, good kitchen equipment, a large refrigerator/freezer, and 220-volt power outlets in the kitchen. There are mosquito nets on the windows (there aren't many mosquitoes, but they provide protection from various other small animals) and a spacious bathroom with storage space and a large shower, hot water in the bathroom and kitchen. The property also features a large table with five chairs on the veranda, a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer, a clothes horse, and storage space, etc. The roof and veranda are insulated.
Guests can use the parking space directly in front of or behind the house. This makes it easy and effortless for guests to load and unload their luggage. As a result, the house is generally also suitable for sick and disabled people. However, we ask that you make a specific request if necessary. The adjacent meadows can also be used for barbecuing, etc. The illuminated barbecue area is designed for romantic and relaxing evenings. Due to its size, the swivel grill with a diameter of approx. 1 m is also suitable for preparing food for vegetarians and vegans. After barbecuing, the grill pit can also be used as a campfire.
There are no grocery stores in Altos del Socorro, only a small pulperia (shop) selling drinks and other small items. The last shopping opportunity coming from Nicoya is in Hojancha (approx. 30 min. drive from the accommodation): there are several small supermarkets, butchers, and bakeries, a pizzeria, several restaurants, a bar, a bank, a post office, hairdressers, a stationery store, a cobbler, hardware stores, a park with a playground, and, if needed, a small hospital, a pharmacy, and a dentist.
It is possible to enjoy a typical Costa Rican breakfast in a cozy atmosphere in the immediate vicinity. However, advance booking is required at least the evening before. On request, a short guided tour of the orchard with a viewpoint is also offered (Mr. Braulio, tel. +506 8861-5960).
The following excursion destinations and sightseeing opportunities are available in the area:
A coffee tour about 2 kilometers outside of Hojancha (Cafe Diria).
The highest waterfall in Central America, Calvo de Salto, is about 7 km from the accommodation.
The Reserva Natural Monte Alto is about 9 kilometers from the accommodation.
The nearest, natural, and beautiful beach of Carillo can be reached in about 75 minutes. After another 15 minutes, you can reach the famous beach of Samara. Other beaches, some of which are very quiet and less frequented, are located in the immediate vicinity.
